The pure reason why America sucks at soccer is becasue of the players who are too old and unfir for a game that needs a lot of stamina. We do have talent here but as the culture goes people stop playing soccer after their hight school or middle school, most of the time. So we need to change that and expose the new generation to soccer, build the talent. Bring young people who are healthy and fit to play the whole 90 mts. This years workd cup team only had one player who was less than 30 and even that guy was too weak to run aroudn the whole 90 minutes. Get young talented player, we might have a change in 10 or 20 years.

Well the main reason is that we are a country of multiple sports. When you have Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer, etc... It spreads thin your athletes and in other countries all the athletes just play soccer. Another reason, is that soccer is cheap. All you need is a ball to kick and most countries are too damn poor to play anything else but soccer. Foreign countries can hate American Soccer, but you will always depend on our troops if your sorry little country needs help!!

One thing only: Arrogance and cockyness.

There is nothing wrong in aspiring to be the best and shoot for number 1. All national teams do that. Us Americans are more competitive, so we feel we have to be up there if not be number 1. Team USA were cocky to believe they could out play European powerhouses like Czech Rep. and Italy in WC play. We were so full of ourselves that we underestimated Ghana who proved to play better than everyone in the group.

People can say that we have to export our players to Europe. Guess what: Bad idea. The great teams and leagues produce and keep their stars (occationally trading EMBLEMIC stars with other leagues, but those only, like Zidane), the weaker teams and leagues produce and export their stars, weakening their leagues and those leagues don't prosper. You develop to sell. Do we want the USA to go that route. No way. Producing a prestigious league takes baby steps and time and planning, especially time. It is arrogant to think we can be like the Bundesliga, Spanish, Italian, French, and English Leagues in a short time (they have decades of clout and existence). Lets support out league, keep on producing coaches and players, and build up a talent system like the Europeans do. Build academies like the French. There is so much to do, but patience is required. But don't send US soccer the route of Africa and Central America, producing stars to export to Latin American or European leagues. That is Third World, something we are not.

yes, i agree, we do suck at soccer. the reason is very simple. all of our best athletes play football, a much more exciting, macho, and strategic sport. and those not good enough to make it in football play basketball, baseball, or hockey. you see, soccer is WAY down the list here, so the soccer players on our national team are the dregs of american athletes. so yes, our soccer team sucks, but so what? no one here gives a s**t about soccer, it's such a stupid sport.

They don't suck, they are only compared to the wrong teams.

If you compare the USA team with teams from it's level (Australia, Japan, etc), you could say their team is not bad. Actually they are pretty well organized and play well as a team.

But like they said before, football is too new in the US (I mean with support from alot of fans), so they will need more time to evolve to the top class.

Now if you think about it, the only americans that play football are the ones that would not go to runball (aka american football), hockey or basketball...

So you'll only see one type of american player, short, skinny and slow runner.... erm... they are doomed to fail... -.-'

We do not have the grass roots program that other countries have. Most of the countries in Europe have soccer clubs in every middle size town and city. It is a passion there. It is only now growing in importance with our children. Give us a few years and we will catch up.

well over the years they have put more enphasis on other sports like basketball, baseball, football, etc......they really started to pay more attetion to soccer when the world cup came to the USA. it takes alot, i mean alot of years to get good people and get an excellent soccer team.........the US is still a beginner on the game, but hopefully with the latino influence on the mls, better players will arise

Yeah, I agree. Not enough Americans are big soccer fans, anyway.Compare football(soccer) to American football. Soccer is an art form. American football....no comment.

I agree.... American just don't get into it and I have no idea why!

I don't understand either because soccer is huge w/young kids and then all of sudden when people reach 20ish.. They just don't enjoy it!

The only way we are going to get good is if we start sending our players to play in the European leagues....
