Moving to a place in Snowdonia without road access, so need 4wheel drive, I think, to get over the Mountain Track. I don't want to mess up the environment any more than necessary, but I'm not sure about converting to riding a mule.

Well it's not great on the road, but by far the most economical 4x4 is the new (ish) Fiat Panda 4x4 and it's not half bad off road. It's got a clever little gear system which allows front wheel drive as default, but allows the rear whells to kick in when traction's lost at the front. At 48mpg extra-urban and 36mpg in urban surroundings it fairs pretty well when compared to small on-road family cars too. ;)

A hummer, Range Rover, Land Cruiser, Lincon navigator. They love the ozone layer more then me. Hovever, working on a farm the only 4x4 has to be a 110 defender from Land Rover.

These are prime examples:

A green Dodge Ram SRT (8.3 Viper V10)
A green Hummer H2 SUT (6.1 Vortec V8)
A green Range Rover Vogue (4.2 Jaguar V8, S/C)
A green Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. (5.7 Hemi V8)
A green Ford Excursion King Ranch (6.8 Triton V10)

Or, my personal favourite, the (hopefully) upcoming Jeep Hurricane with not one, but TWO beautiful, lovely, sweeet 5700cc Chrysler Hemi V8 motors ;) That's one per axle. It's very very powerful, very very kickass, and very very green. If it's available in green, that is...

You need a GMC vehicle with traction tires under it. Traction tires will give you the grip you need to claw your way up most terrain. Also-a GMC-Chevy-GM truck is most dependable.
