I want to hide my IP address so websites don't track me or know who I am. Ip addresses allow spyware and sites to follow u and track u. Can Someone please tell me more about IP addresses. I have a DSL connection. Will deleting my cookies and hiding my ip adress prevent website trackers?

If you have DSL, then you do not have to worry about your IP address. With DSL, you are given an IP address from a large pool of addresses everytime you access the Internet. When you shut down, that IP is returned to the pool for whoever logs on next to use. The next time you go on the Internet, you will be handed whatever IP is available at the time. So your IP changes ever time you boot your computer. Plus your ISP mask the IP so that no one can see it (but them of course - and you can't mask it from them).

What is used for tracking you on the Internet are cookies. They are little files written to your hard drive when you visit some web sites. While most are harmless, and can actually improve how a web site works for you by storing your preferrences, etc., it is possbile for someone to read what cookies are on your computer and guess what web sites you have visited in the past. (Notice that it has nothing to do with your IP address). Deleting the cookies on your PC will prevent this.

So you did answer your own question. You can protect yourself from being tracked by deleting cookies.

Although most DSL connections use dynamic addressing, it's not unusual to keep getting the same IP address. I've had the same dynamic address for 4 years!

It you want to cover your tracks, you'll need an anonymous proxy. The best of the lot is Anonymizer. Go to http://www.anonymizer.com It is NOT a free service.

Deleting cookies can help in some cases, however it's more of a pain in the @$$ than it's worth since much good information is contained in cookies.

You cannot hide your IP address. When you connect to a service on the Internet (e-mail, IM, web sites, FTP servers, etc.), that service needs to know where to send the data you requested.

IP addresses do not allow spyware. Irresponsible computing allows spyware.

I've been using computers for over 25 years and I've never had a virus or spyware.

There is nothing impossible. You can't break any rules of Internet protocal. ISP are monitoring 24 hour and they can see whatever you do. ISP might have been taken your address. When u do something like hacking they may see. I hacked for one time. ISP sent me that all address I visited while I was hacking. Ultimate they disconnected me and took connection from another ISP.

Putty is for example.

Use a proxy. They hide the I.P. adress of your computer, but in general don't worry. You have DSL so in your home portal there should already be all the software you need.
