Wash them again. This time use a product called SA8® with Bioquest ® Concentrated Detergent. Not only is it THE best detergent you can buy but it is also affordable at only $8.50.
Yes, it is a Quixstar product but if you know anything about Quixstar, you know that their soaps are legendary!

A safe, natural, earth friendly way to do that is by adding some lemon juice to your wash water. However, if the smell is really bad and the towels weren't that expensive you may just want to consider buying some new ones. Nothing is more disgusting than smelling like mildew after you dry off from a shower or bath.

If there are any stains, use a nappysan type product or spot stain remover then wash in warm water with a bottle of white vinegar added (1 Litre bottles are cheap - add to your machine load). Vinegar kills mould/mildew residue. Rinse well.
Then rinse with a fabric softener.

Wash them in hot water, with a little bleach, and a little lysol, and some liquid tide. As soon as the load is finished, hang them on the clothes line. Nothing smells better, than when you hang clothes on the line, and let the sun, and wind dry them.. If that's not possible, put them in the dryer, right after the wash is finished, with 2 dryer sheets..good luck..

go to a local store and see if you can get fabric softner in those refill soft plastic packs. place it between your towels. the fragrance should take the oudours away and kill the bacteria. after 2 weeks buy new and replace the old one. use the old in your washing. it also takes away odours and smell of smoke inside your car! just flip it under the seat and replace it once a month.

Try soaking them in a vinegar and water solution, or for a less acidic smell, lemon juice and water. After soaking overnight, wash them as you normally would.

Lysol liquid will remove it. It comes in a little brown bottle and is sold in the grocery stores.

Wash them in hot soap and dry them immediately. Don't let them sit in a pile while wet.
