The snake is black with 3 stripes down its back. The main one (middle) is a reddish orange color, the other two are a yellowish white color. The head is kind of pointed like an arrow.

If you're not sure, don't touch it! Call animal control, and have them come out. It may be embarrassing to have them tell you it's non-venomous and you're over-reacting, but it's better them pronouncing you dead at the scene if it is venomous!

If the stripes go the length of the snake, it's a garden/garter snake and is totally harmless. If they go around the snake, it's a different story. If that's the case, could be harmless, or could be poisonous. If they go around the snake, with the red rings touching the yellow, it's a bad one, coral snake, very poisonous! If the rings of red and yellow are seperated by a white band, it's a king snake, harmless. Either way, I suggest studying it from a distance until you know for sure. You might want to check with your local state university. They usually have a good idea of the species in their area. If they have a natural history museum, there'll even be one on display. Sometimes the local zoo has someone who would be of help too.

from your brief description i would say that you have a Gardner snake. are the stripes running vertical(up&down the back?) if so then there are no poisonous snakes in the u.s. that are of that description. if they were running across the back horizontal then you could possibly have a corral snake? but they are very hard to find and are only in small pockets of the southeast and are very nocturnal. so i would say it is a non-venomous snake. you cant always go by the shape of the head since even the best of us see a triangular shape. a better indicator is to look @ the eyes. if they are round then it is deffinetely non-poisonous. if the eyes are elliptical then be careful. but it does just sound like a ole gardner to me!!

It's hard to tell, also I don't know where you live. It might be a garter snake (harmless), that's what it sounds like, but venomous snakes have an arrow-pointed head, so stay away from it anyways. Or cut off it's head with a shovel.

A milk snake or a coral snake.
Coral is poisonous.
If the red touches yellow then it is a coral snake.
If the red touches the black then it is a milk snake. Not Poisonous.
Red touches yellow kill a fellow
Red touches black friend of Jack

Sounds like a garter snake. Harmless. Not a rattler because rattlers have a diamond pattern. Same with copperheads.

First, This snake is very poisonous !!! This snake could be a rattler, or if there is a little creek near your house, it is a water moccasin. Both are very poisonous. If need be, you can call your local game warden and see if they will come out to your house to remove it.
