Chipmunks Do not usually live up in trees they but they can and do, but they generally live in underground burrows, several different kinds like the Cliff Chipmunk usually den in cliffs or rock piles.the Gray-collared chipmunk nests under logs, stumps or roots, or in tree hollows and have been found nesting in woodpecker holes. Yellow Pine Chipmunk lives in burrows underground usually about 1 1/2 to 3 feet long and 7 to 21 inches deep. The least Chipmunk is an excellent climber, it climbs trees to sun itself and may nest in them, The pair that lives in my yard has a large burrow in my garden. However the majority of chipmunks can climb trees but rarely nest in them unless it is in the base of the tree close to the ground.
