February 5, 1948 -- Born in Torsby, Sweden
1975 -- Knee injury brings an undistinguished playing career as a right back for Swedish second division side Karlskoga to an abrupt end.
1976 -- Appointed coach of Swedish third division Degerfors and guides them to the top flight within three years.
1980-82 -- Joins IFK Gothenburg. Coaches them to one Swedish championship, two domestic cup titles and the 1982 UEFA Cup.
1982-84 -- Coaches Benfica to two championships and a cup title in just two seasons.
1984-85 -- Arrives in Italy and joins AS Roma. Guides them to seventh place in his first season.
1985-86 -- Coaches Roma to within sight of the league title but his side lose 3-2 at home to relegated Lecce on the penultimate day of the season and cede the crown to Juventus by two points. Eriksson has to settle for the 1986 Italian Cup title instead.
May 4, 1987 -- Resigns from Roma.
1987-1989 -- At Fiorentina. Coaches them to eighth and seventh place finishes in Serie A.
1989-1991 -- Returns to Benfica and guides them to the 1990 European Cup final and the 1991 league title.
1991-1996 -- Back in Italy with Sampdoria but brings them only Italian Cup title in five years at the helm.
1997-1998 -- Arrives at Lazio and coaches them to the Italian Cup in his first season in charge. Lazio briefly challenge for the league before fading in the run-in. They are beaten 3-0 by Inter Milan in the UEFA Cup final.
1998-1999 -- Gives Lazio their first European trophy -- the Cup Winners' Cup. They beat Mallorca in the final in Birmingham. But Lazio throw away a six-point lead at the top of Serie A in the spring and cede the title to AC Milan by a single point on the last day of the season.
1999-2000 -- Coaches Lazio to the league and cup double, giving the Rome side only the second "scudetto" in their history and their first in 26 years. Lazio trail Juventus by nine points with seven matches to play but claw back the deficit and win the title on a dramatic final day of the season.
Oct 2000 -- Linked with England job when Kevin Keegan resigns following 1-0 defeat by Germany at Wembley. Repeatedly pledges to fulfil his contract until July 2001.
Oct 30 -- English FA say they are negotiating with Eriksson to take charge of England's national team.
Oct 31 -- Eriksson confirmed as next England coach.
Jan 9 2001 -- Resigns as coach of Lazio
