I know Indepencence day is tomorrow July 4th and it is a holiday in the USA. Is it normal for businesses to take a 4 day weekend for this celebration?

It isn't usually given as a day off, but since it is on a Monday this year and we have a day off in the middle of the week, some places are kinda letting it slide. I, however, am working. (Well, I'm at work, anyway. Does Yahoo Answers count as working?)

Some do. Some don't. The business I work at is closed today. It is a manufacturering plant. So many people requested today as a vacation day (they want that 4 day weekend) that they would have been unable to run production. So they get it as an unpaid day off. I however, as the IT person, am working today and tomorrow doing all the tihings I can't do to the network while production is running. So-- some do. Some don't.

When it comes at an inconvenient time during the week. If most of your customers will likely be out of town on holiday, I'd probably close the doors and join them--hey, I am right now. Usually, no.

I'm off, but only by this special "one day a year" thing our CEO can use to give everyone off one day a year.
