If you do not want to have to regravel due to settling or run-off every once in a while, then you should probably start by digging out the new drive way to about 8 to 10 inches. This allows you to get pass the loose top soil and start out on a stiffer or clay base. Once you have the driveway dug, fill it with base rock (large crushed rock) close to the top. After the base rock is there, then lay down the new gravel. Unless you have access to a roller or tamper to tamp the base rock the gravel may settle a little during the first year so that you may have to add a little bit of gravel. You will have a very well built driveway.

Put down a layer of giant gravel - it sinks down into the dirt and forms a foundation. Next layer is medium gravel. Then finally, top it off with a layer of tiny gravel and dust. You can't just put down the little gravel, it'll all sink down into the dirt below and you'll have a muddy mess.

A few years ago, my firedepartment needed to re-stone a parking lot. It just so happened that one of the roads in town was being milled. We had the company that was doing the milling drop a few loads of road milling.

The great thing about the millings is that it sticks together, unlike loose stone, and creates a great durable "gravel" surface. In most cases, they will drop it for free because they would normally have to pay to dump it.

I agree with the first answer and would only add. You should crown the drive. Crown is to have the center of the drive slightly higher and tapering to the sides. This promotes water running to the sides.
