this is my first baby. the contractions range from every 6 min and then can wait to 20 min and then get closer. they have not been a consistante amt of time for an hour yet. they are painful, and my ob/gyn confirmed that they are real labor pain but they are considered early labor pains. also yesturday 6/2/06 at 5:30 pm i was less than a centermeter dialated.

at this point i would love to be at the hospital with pain meds but the docs sent me home and told me to wait until i had real pains. this to me sounds pretty ironic especially since i went to the hospital b/c i thought these were real pains. now that i am over with being fustrated at the docs im just trying to focus on having my baby. thank for the input, it is keeping me entertained until i have "real labor pains"!

My wife had consistent contactions for days. We finally drove to the mall and had a long fast walk to get things progressing.

A friend of mine had a homebirth with over 50 hours of contractions--and didn't want to go to the hospital; nothing was wrong with her or the baby, who was born just fine & healthy. Some labors take a *long* time.

(Me, I got lucky; both my births were less than 5 hours between "oww oww that really really hurts let's get to the hospital" and "wow, now you're gonna cut the cord?")

You can try to think of your contractions as "toning contractions," stretching the uterus. It's not just pointless pain; your body's trying to get ready to do the hard work of pushing the baby through a tiny spot.

My sister was in labor for her last 4 months. With my second, I was 2cm at 30 weeks, 4cm at 38 weeks... with intermittend contractions.. I had to be induced at 40 weeks. It can last a while , or not long at all. Everyone is different. Hang in there and don't stress out.

Well I'm a twin and my mom went into labor 6 weeks before I was born (& I was 6 wks preemie!). Everyone's bodies are different. Your doctor should be on call for these questions. Good luck with everything and congratulations!

I was having inconsistant labor pains for about 42hrs before I went into "real labor". When it came it came really fast, so be ready to go!!!! I'm sure that your doctor told you that if it continues for another 24hrs, you should probably think about being induced, it your water has already broken you should be at the hospital NOW.
If it hasn't yet, it may not, they may have to break it for you.

My friend had contractions five minutes apart for 62 hours. She ended up being a c-section because instead of dilating, her cervix closed.

But I have another friend who had less than 12 hours of contractions.

First babies come when they're good and ready. Wait until they're consistent and then start timing them.

Good luck!!

It varies. As for my own; mine were of and on for about a week period with me being 1 cm. I know this answer will frustrate you; for it did me, but you will TRULY know when they are real labor pains. Just be strong through it all, and give into the pain. Don't fight it and it will all go easier.

With my second, I had contractions consistently for 2 weeks before I had her. They can last that long or maybe longer. Doctors are stupid and they will say they aren't "real pains" until you're screaming for drugs lol.

I was in labor for four days, and then had a c-section. :-( The pitosin (sorry if this is spelled wrong..nothing in spell check) didn't work. (That is the medicine that they give you to try to put the labor over the edge and make you dilate. Good luck, dear. I know how impatient this can make you. AND WELCOME TO YOUR BABY!!!! I hope everything goes well for you, and your baby.
