Programming is logic...telling the computer how to do something step by step. To be really successful in programming you should have a clear understanding of logic.
I had a professor tell my class that "I refuse to teach programming in this class. You will, however, learn to think in logical terms. Once you master thinking logically, you can then apply that thinking to ANY programming language, old and new." And he was right!!!
The language is not as important as your ability to put together a sequence of logic that is not only clean, but does exactly what you set out to do while allowing for the unexpected. (the unexpected is usually found once you let a user use your program).
Learn .NET and Java, you will find that Java and the C flavors of language are very similar in syntax. VB.NET is very user friendly and is a quick learn.

Well, which u like?, see both have good markets (though J2EE Pays better but less on demand), it all goes to what u like since both need to be followed and kept up to date concerning your skills, its a tuff call, but one I think u have to make, since u can focus on the fields, its not recommended that u even try that. Microsoft .Net based systems controls 90+% of the world software market. on the other hand huge project, and critical ones (e.g.: Stock Exchange , Power planet) that demand stability usually go java and Unix , on the other hand everything else including mobile solutions (sympian used to rule on that market windows mobile is catching up fast) . Personally I'm a .Net guy. But if some one had the time, and the determination, Java is a good choice.

.NET to start because it's an easier programming environment and a lot of things are set up for you( particularly VB.NET).Just a little way behind that is the IBM Eclipse environment ( which you can use for Java , and a lot of other systems as well). Note very well , eclipse is free, .NET studio isn't.
