You can clear the temporary files as well as cookies from the hard-drive.Also uninstall the applications that you have not used for long time.
Go to Windows Explorer --> Tools --> Folder Options. click on the View tab and select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" under "Hidden Files and Folders" item in the list box and clear check-mark from "Hide File extensions for known file types". Click Apply and close the dialog box.
Go to your system partition (where Windows folder is located, mostly C:\). Open Documents & Settings folder, and if there is a user with Administrative Privileges, open that folder, say
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator
Click on the folder titled Recent. Select all the items listed (Ctrl-A) and press Delete.
Then go to ...\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. Repeat the previous process all-over again.
Do the same steps for Temp as well as History folder.
Close Explorer and empty the Recycle bin. Then run Disk Defragmanter (make sure no other applications are running) and leave it ruunning overnight.
If Defrag doesn't get stopped, ur machines HD would have gained some space.
Hope this helps... and good luck!

First do not use windows to compress your files! Buy a good program that will only do that, because if you don't the drive might UN-compress and then you lose every thing. It has happen to me. Second just buy a 2nd drive and back things up on cd and other media. That way you will have that stuff to re-install-- if things do go bad. Finally, move the pictures and music from the 1st hard drive and tothe second one. If your OS is on a different drive you will not lose that too.

You might want to consider getting an external hard drive, probably something in the 120 GB range. Assuming you have a USB port on your pc, you can just plug in the external drive, and transfer a lot of the accumulated files and folders from the C: drive to the new external one. That'll free up plenty of space on the internal hard drive. Compressing the files and folders is really a last resort sort of thing, and I'd avoid it if you can.

Maybe defrag? Also go to add/remove programs in control panel and uninstall everything you don't need. Erase all your temporary internet files. Delete (or move to a CD or other computer) files you don't need anymore. I definitely recommend getting a new hard drive to expand on that. If you're that low on space, you should get some more. They're not that expensive.

Gee whiz, what all do you have on your computer?! First off, uninstall all the programs you never use. Also, be sure to check for viruses and spyware, which can, at the minimum, eat up hard drive space.

Purchase a second hard drive. You should be able to get a sizable one from TigerDirect or NewEgg for $50.
If you are too cheap for this, then yeah compress your files.

the easiest way to go about this is to buy a new hd either secondary interanall or an external since eventually you are going to need one or you could try cleaning up your hd, delete temp files, recycle bins, old programs and files that are not being used anymore, etc... then defragment your hd.
