If the Yellow Pages can't help (& they now have a 'comic book store' listing, so they might) try 1-800-COMIC-BOOK. At this point, I think you enter a Zip Code, but I don't know; the store I buy from is run by a guy who used to be a customer of my own store.

Bless you for supporting your Boyfriends hobby!
Local comic shops are always good...
Ebay has tons of stuff...
I guess the main question is... however,
"What titles does he like the most?"
Were I in your shoes, I'd find out where he gets his comics from, especially if he's a "regular" who frequents the place... the owner might know him, and you get the inside track... great for suprises.
You could also look through his collection (but this can be very, VERY time consuming) to see what his favorite series are, and look on Google and ebay to see if there are rare or hard to find copies out of that series. Snagging one of those might just floor your guy, and he'll totally be yours...
(Unless he's exceptionally shallow and self-centered, In which case you'll need to resort to more... ah... "direct" methods of getting his attention)

The best place is to find a local comic book store with a knowledgeable staff. Check your local phone book for a small shop, or if you can't find one that way, swing by your local mall and stop in at the game/hobby shop and ask them, they will be able to tell you about the local hotspots.
