A week ago Sunday I had a new engine put in my Saturn (well its not a NEW engine, but new to my car). I hear there are proper ways and improper ways to break it in, does anyone have suggestions?

If it is not a factory new or rebuilt but rather an engine swapped from another car then you do not need to break it in. If it has been rebuilt then follow these instructions http://www.enginesonly.com/break-in.html
Good luck! enjoy the ride

The proper way to break an engine is,
a.) allow an even warm up time, When at operating temrpature practice what I call 'roll ons' basically while going up a hill increase the throttle up to the red line then back off. Not a fast rev. But just a gradual acceleration you can feel in the pants. Basically your trying to get the rings seated

go to i5 and for every exit you see
go exit then enter the free way
so that your engine will get use to all the 5 or 4 speed you have
not just one constant gear and one constant speed
