Well, to perhaps over-simplify:
Men tend to be achievement-oriented. A very large question to them is, "Am I capable/competent?" or "Do I have what it takes?" Men who lose their jobs often suffer a severe blow to their identity.
Being a strong and capable "hero" fits right in line with these motivations. A hero is strong enough to accomplish things, protect others, and has the courage to continue even in the face of hardship. It is very much about the man proving his strength.
You might also ask, "Why do young girls consistently imagine themselves to be princesses?" A woman often judges her value by how much others desire her (whether romantically or just as friends). Relationships help give her identity.
Women tend to be stabilized by their relationships and can take a hit professionally much better than a man can. They're not necessarily trying to see themselves as "heroes," but desire to build strong relationships and be loved by those they love.

Personally I would live a long and happy life if I was never put in the position to needing to be a hero.
However, with that being said, if a situation arose where I would have to put myself in harm's way in order to protect my wife and child I would do it, not because I wanted to, but because there really is no other option.

Comes naturally to men AND women. We have a huge sense of protecting things we hold close to us. We like to know that we can control our lives, it strengthens the EGO. It is not any different for men than it is for women...coming from one. I think men challenge themselves because it is what makes them behave as a man should be: strong, courageous and brave...women too! I think it will show men that it is important to women to be hero's also but as soon as we get our first female President.

Men want to be heroes in every possible field because it gives a feeling of achievement and importance to them. It fulfill their ego that they are superior and powerful. They also feel that is how the world realises their worth

Men's egos are huge. We see ourselves as the providers for our families and the defenders of what we hold dear. Anybody or anything who messes with us, our dependents or property must be dealt with. It is also in our nature to be aggressive. And, since going around with a guilty conscience isn't fun, we choose to funnel our aggression into being heroes. And, of course, there's always the need to impress the ladies.

I think you're making "assumptions"
I place importance on things like loving my kids and providing for them.
I occasionally fantasize about what'd be like to be a hero, but I'm too busy to place a lot of importance on being idolized.
