it was dived into 4 categories
brahmana(one who studies veda & preaches it)
vyasa(buisness persons)
kshythreya(one who protects the country)
shoodhra(one who serves)

these is how lord (dived) dived based on what duties they perform, there is nothing upper or lower in it

it is not by birth

it again also depends on the tendencies,
he might b a brahmana but he can b always thinking about money(vysha)

expound on your question, What about the cast system in India. it still exists, although, illegally. The Indian government has outlawed it, but people still use it as a measure of someone's worth and educational prerequisite. Very few people of the lower casts can get into university or become anything but menial labourers.
It would be very nice if these people were the ones who emigrated to North America and England, as the ones who do , tend to have the attitude that they are better than the people of the country they are moving to and demand special treatment.
