My car just got a new engine put in it, and for the past week I have noticed every now and then when I stop (at a light or in traffic) and then push on the gas again smoke will come out the exhust. *It doesnt do it everytime but enough to make me wonder, this didnt happen before.

Also the car twice has felt shaky like it was going to stall when I reached a red light.....

Anyone know what this could be?

* I know I need to take it in to the shop but I am trying to figure out what it could be before I take it in.... is it a simple fix or something crucial? Could it be related to the new engine? Someone mentioned the distributor cap or spark plugs, does this sound like it could be that?

puff of smoke during initial acceleration. My first question is what color smoke.

white = water in the combustion chamber
blue = oil in the combustion chamger
dark = your running too rich.

It maybe that your pinging, are you sure your running the right grade fuel in the engine. Also did you allow the engine its proper break in period

If you just spent enough money to have a new engine put in then by all means take it back to the shop that did the work. Of all the parts in the engine almost all of them could cause the problem.

It would be easier if I knew more about the car/engine. Is it fuel injected? does it have computers controlling the spark/fuel? What year is it and what kind of car?

If the original shop does not cure the problem take it to the dealer, spend the $150 to have them diagnose the problem. Take the report back to the original shop. If they won't fix it go to small claims court.

could be any number of things. what color is the smoke? a tune-up may help.
how long ago did you get the new engine? did they tell you how to break it in? there's right ways and wrong ways to break in an engine..if not done properly, the rings on the pistons will not seat properly..leading to smoke and poor performance

first of all for your smoke comming out of your exaust it may be your oil being low so check your oil and also check all your fluids it may also be you might need anti freze. second for your shaky stalling it may be your spark plugs. hope this helps.

If it smokes after you sit at a traffic light - its probably the valves...

it sounds like you have a vacuum leak causing too much fuel to dump into the cylinders. find the vacuum leak and you found your problem

Is it blueish smoke? You might have an oil leak.
