depends on the type of oil you use. Your typical non synthetic is good for 5000 miles before breakdown. Everyone else will say 3000 miles. Some sythetics will go as much as 10,000miles. If you are a easy commuter ie. no off roading, long hils hard driving. every 4000 miles will work for a non sythetic. If you go with a synthetic then go by whatever the brand suggest. Keep in mind ifyou ask jiffy lube they will always say 3,000 miles becuase they want your money.

ohhh this is probably your next question .. do I need sythetic ?? no for a regular old scion (toyota) non synthetic will be fine.

Well, it depends on the type and quality of oil that you use. If you use a conventional motor oil ( non synthetic ), I wouldn't suggest any more than 3000 - 5000 miles between oil changes and, no more than 3000 miles or 3 months if you do alot of "stop and go" driving or drive in dusty conditions ( considered "severe duty" driving ).

A "good" synthetic motor oil ( such as Mobil 1 or Castrol ) will get you between 4000 - 6000 miles unless it is considered an "extended service" oil ( Mobil 1 has just started doing this ) which is good for 10,000 - 15,000 miles. You need only change the filter every 4000 - 5000 miles and top off the oil.

The BEST synthetic oil that you can get however, is AMSOIL. AMSOIL is the first synthetic motor oil ( Since 1972 ) and has always boasted ( and backed, in writing ) an "extended drain interval" of 25,000 miles or once a year ( normal service ) or 15,000 miles or once a year ( severe service ).

Alot of people say that AMSOIL is overly expensive and, you can get the same oil in Mobil 1 at WalMart for less. AMSOIL has done laboratory testing to compare AMSOIL to all other leading synthetic and conventional motor oils including Mobil 1, Castrol, Royal Purple and Golden Spectrum. Check it out for yourself:

Of course there will still be some of you who will say that the results are biased or unfair. Well, if that were so, don't you think that all those other "big name" oil companies would say something about it ? The reason they don't say anything to dispute it is because they CAN'T. AMSOIL has proven that it's the best and all the other companies can do is hope that more people won't look past the shelf at WalMart or local autoparts store.
Also, there's more than just AMSOIL saying that AMSOIL is the best, there are professional endorsements, satisfied customers' testimonials and everyday people like me who have tried it for themselves and now wouldn't use anything else. Read them for yourself .....

I use AMSOIL in everything that I own that uses motor oil. My car, truck, motorcycle, lawnmower, chainsaw and grass trimmer. Since using AMSOIL, I've gained 1 -2 MPG, my vehicles engines run smoother, quieter and cooler ( 15 degrees cooler in my air-cooled H-D engine ), plus, I save over $100 a year by only having to change my oil and filter once a year !

You want "good" oil, go to WalMart, you want the BEST synthetic oil, gear lube, transmission fluid, and grease for your car. Go here. Once you've tried it, you'll see that nothing else even comes close.

Oil change & tire rotation every 5,000 miles. I think that is what is in your manual too? That was the recommendation at our Toyota Dealership.
