A character in this story I am writing needs a 1 by 4 inch scar on her side. I was thinking of a burn mark, but how would she have gotten a burn on her side?

She would have been a teenager when she got it. It probably was something someone did to her. i.e. the girls that pick on her, her dad, or an accident

It would help to have more about the story, so we get the flow of it and can be more useful instead of telling you the complete opposite of the story meaning
But ... if not burn she could have gotten thrown threw a window or something like that

She fell out of a tree and landed on a picket fence as a kid.
Or she had surgery as an infant (could be from a burn from scalding water, or a birth defect, or removal of a large birth mark).

A burn doesn't make sense here. Maybe a stab wound. Or can it just be some kind of freaky birthmark? Not sure what works for your story.

Ditch the burn mark and go for a knife wound if it's going to be on the side...

Try a car accident when she was young..and the car exploded.....or she when she was young she fell and knocked over a Bar b que pit.......it's endless........best of luck with your story.....

How about when the character was a kid, he/she had a scar as a birthmark.
