Police must work in the rules to aprehend criminals who work outside the rules. What a conundrum!
They do a good job with the restrictions placed upon them and we would be sorely lost without their presence in our lives.

It depends on whether you mean police as individuals or as an institution. The police were originally established not to protect people or solve crimes but to protect property. At the end of the day they will always act to uphold the positions of the ruling classes, so if they are corrupt or intent on subjugating the populace, then the police will too.
On an individual level it differs- some people join the police to put something back into the community and help, and they are to be commended. There are others who join up to go on a power trip, and get their kicks from the authority. I work with young people and one of the lads I work with had been in trouble in the past but was trying to sort his life out. 3 local policemen took it upon themselves to harass young people, so they handcuffed him, bundled him into a car and took him out to an isolated spot where they broke his ribs- where was the incentive for him to try to continue turning his life around- luckily, with support from myself and a few other workers he rose above it and continues to make ammends for past misdeeds, even with constant harrassment from this 3 specific police officers.
So the police do the government's bidding, but then so do the media. The way the miners strike was portrayed in 1984-5 is proof of that, in particular the so called "Battle of Orgreave" where the police attacked a peaceful picket line and the television news re-edited the film to make it look like the miners were the instigaters.
So while the police may be a necessary evil and there are individuals doing a good job within it, they are still a reactionary force.

I really think they have an unenviable job - and for the most part do it brilliantly.
At one end of the scale we see them policing problem areas like the miners strike and poll tax riots where they are portrayed in a negative light - but ask yourself who has to keep law and order under extreme conditions.
Then at the other we see them bringing dangerous criminals to book.
There are necessary guidelines from both judiciary and government but sometimes it does seem that their hands are tied under an enormous weight of bureaucracy sometimes.
I know there are some bad police but I think that the greater majority are all unsung heroes.
p.s. I am not a policeman.

Like all people police have good and bad days, very few of them are "bad" but sometimes the stress of the job and the things they see can get to them.
Laws are to protect all of us, if bad laws are passed, we should work to have them changed but do our best to live with them until they are.
A lot of today's problems are from the fact that we have become a culture of victims. The police stopped you because you were doing 75 in a 50 zone, not because you were young, in a red car or whatever.

There are some good and some bad but just like one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch, the same goes with police. In a lot of situations, good cops see bad cops doing evil, corrupt things and they remain silent. That makes them almost as bad as the corrupt ones. Silence equals acceptance. Police profiling is also a reality. People who are not profiled don't care and want to pretend its not happening by claiming people are crying "victim". Cops are just ordinary people. They can be ignorant and evil. They are not required to be educated. They are taught in their training that it is ok to profile, lie, and use brutal force. A lot of them were nerds who were picked on in high school and it makes them feel powerful and in control.

Well if you live in the UK you can bet the criminals will walk free... infact, some dude from America got fired because he thought his job was "to protect innocent people!" (Was in the Daily Mirror) instead of "rehabilitating criminals" Okay so a guy tries to rob me, takes out a knife and stabs me, then walks free because of his "human rights" where the F**K is my right to walk down the street without getting robbed or a knife stuck in my body? The Uk law system is a joke, and unfortunatly police can't do anything to help you (I was actually told down the phone before while reading off a number plate, I'm sorry but there is nothing we can do to help you!) Bloody morons...!!!!!!!

For the most part, police do what they are paid to do, protect and serve.
However, it isn't fair to ask "Are they all good or bad," because when you speak in absolutes, you are always wrong. (that's a little absolute humor...always wrong...hahaha...I'm so funny)
But seriously, police are human. You will find some are good, and some...well not so good. But the vast majority do a very fine job and are serving as policemen for all the right reasons.

As rfamilymember said, there are good cops and bad cops, just like there are good people and bad people.
Their hands are tied by the government to an extent because they have to be in order for this to be a free society.

My husband is a policeman. He has to follow the rules and live by them himself. There are corrupt people everywhere you look. You find people that steal, cheat, lie, kill and take advantage of others. Those are the ones you read or hear about. The average person that just does their job and does it well, does not get mentioned in the news.

I think their are good and bad cops just like people. Some choose to be good loyal cops other tend to help the otherside. In the bigger cities you have police that work with the drug dealers for extra cash. Thank GOD they are far and few inbetween.
