"Out of"? You mounting it in another vehicle? That could make a massive difference, of course.
Assuming the motor is being re-installed, or is still in, the original car, you have very few options. It is possible to have the engine's parts replaced with higher-efficiency components such as racing bearings and other parts that reduce friction and improve overall performance.
Obtaining a minimum of 25% improvement in mileage, however, is probably asking too much - and the cost of making such mechanical improvements is far beyond the value you will ever realize in fuel cost savings.
This engine has been optimized within an extremely complex arrangement of fuel and air supply control, emissions controls, and how it performs related to the vehicle's transmission, wheels, and so forth. You cannot make any dramtic changes in its injectors, adopting "magic carburetors," or other devices. About all you can do is equip it to run as well as possible, meep it well-maintained, and adopt careful driving habits that are fuel efficient.
Good luck!

Actually that is good MPG for a that vehicle.
What I see neglected and cheap to correct is low tire pressure. Keep the tires up on pressure
Any misfire will kill MPG fast. Plugs over 30 K usally have some misfire.
Also on the list is engine correctly comming up to tempeture.
If not and you are trying to save on gas by buying off brand gas -- try like Chevron / Shell and check you mileage on a tank or two.
Anf filters dirty, dragging brakes, and driving habits can lower MPG
New O2 (Bosch) may help a little
The lighter weigh oils recommended may help

Hey .. you own a BMW .. you dont need to worry about fuel economy.
3.0 L straight 6 is a marvel. Feed it as much as it wants, let her rip.
But if you want to keep her tame, dont let the engine revs exceed 3000 rpm in any gear, if you have a automatic transmission, you need to be gentle with the gas pedal and the BMW will be well behaved.

I would suggest selling the 3 liter and getting a smart car. Jokes aside keep it in perfect runnign order. Change the oil on a regular basis, you may want to invest in a K& N air filter. Bring the car in for regular tune ups. Also lay off the lead foot.

You can put a better flowing exhaust system in it. It would also help to clean your fuel and air filters. Sometimes the fuel filter robs you out of mpg.

Drive slower. 45 mph should be the optimal speed. You can probably achieve 30mpg if you can run through stop signs and red lights in local and cruise at 45 on the freeway :)
