In the olden, not so golden years, when mankind was creeping out from his caves, they needed a way to deal with the world. That is basically how medicine men, shamans, and wise men came into being. The entire tribe depended upon these people to help them survive the elements.
As time passed and monarchs, kings, pharaohs ascended to positions of leadership, they employed these same people as counsel to keep the masses intact and governed. And because the masses depended on these same people in the past, they came to believe the current rulers were good and just.
As Christianity came into being, they used the same technique and style, only now they were referred to as prophets. To prove they were the One True way they used the prophets to support their beliefs. All religions do this.
Mankind knows his own mind, that is why the furture is feared. We all know what we are capable of doing and it scares us. We seek to find a better way.
In response to a previous reply I posit this:
Family Counselors charge fees.
Stock Market Advisors charge fees.
Psychologists charge fees.
Job Counselors charge fees.
Temporary Employment Services charge fees. (Yes, they do, that's why your wage is below market value)
Financial Investors charge a fee. (This is a good one, they are betting on the Stock Market, using your money, and charging you for it and if the stock goes up, they get a commission, it it goes down, you lose.)
Personal Advisors charge a fee.
As times have changed so have the descriptons for the job of seeing into the future. The 'Smart' ones just give themselves a fancy self-important name. They use basically the same techinques as the 'Soothsayer' 'Seer' 'Fortune Teller' etc. Only difference, they use modern technological science. And when they get it wrong they put a 'Spin' on it.
If you look or think about what a counselor/advisor does, you will see they tend to go with the norm. Much of what happens with them IS general feedback for the norm and the not-so-norm, (which in effect IS the norm because they deal with it more often than the general public). So to another counselor/advisor the advice IS general. Just not to us, because we are not in that field.
Fortune Tellers are straight forward. People know, when they walk in, that this is not exactly science. The aforementioned group has let them down significantly and they are searching for an answer.
It's also psycological. If we want the 'fortune' to be true we subconsciously work to make it true. With the other advisors we take their word for it and don't work on the situation internally.
I'm not for or against fortune tellers, now-a-days, because of the internet, tv, radio, computers, etc. there are a lot of choices to be made. I look at them as entertainment.
Way back in the early 70's a bunch of girlfriends convinced me to go with them to a fortune teller, I didn't want to go. I was skeptical. 'Oh come on it'll be fun!" I went. I was told in three years I would give birth at the end of February beginning of March to a healthy baby boy with blond hair. Yeah, right. Had to get hubby thru college first, then his Master's. He certainly didn't want kids at this point.
Yup, got pregnant. Hospital tests later on said the baby was going to be a girl. Fast heartbeat for girls because they tend to be smaller and their hormones blend with mommy. If mommy is anxious so is baby. Slower heartbeat for boys because they tend to be larger and more contrary to mom's hormones. (gee, just like the grown-ups LOL) Est. birth date. April 1-14. April Fool or a tax write-off.
Yup, son born 1st week of March with blond hair, three years from the reading. I have rationalized this up the ying-yang. I was the only unbeliever there, and yet it happened. I know it was a 50-50 chance but the Doctor was pretty sure I would have a girl.
Stuff happens.

Funny that you should ask. I used to own an interest in a business that stayed open late. It was my turn to take care of the business and just before closing an old woman slipped threw the door way. Now it is worthy of mention that this was decades ago and at the time I didn't believe in me, let alone some parlour trickery; yet there was something almost mystical about this withered and severe form that was keeping me from closing up. I asked what I could do for her and she replied that it was the other way around, I was the one going to benefit from our exchange. The old woman grabbed my left hand and started telling me all this stuff, some things so ridicules I laughed out loud; other things just freaked me out; all of it about me and my own. As quick as she had slipped into the store she was gone out again. I stood for a few minutes just reeling, regained my composure and when about my night. So that was decades gone by now and from the mundane to the shocking the old hen has hit the mark. I told my dear Mother about this before She passed away and Her advice was beware the gifts of witches, but hey; it's not like I can give it back and now that the latest thing has come good I'm just going with it. Takes the stress off. So I'd have to say that I don't in fortune tellers that advertise but that old woman had the mojo for sure. I hope this helped, take care.

I think that they are a crock of ****, they always tell really general things that could apply to everyone. The only time a fortune teller was right on the mark we were sure they were eavesdropping in our converstaion. My sister and I were talkign about her new boyfriend and how nervous she was because he lived so far away and how much she always missed him and then this woman randomly came up to us and "told our fortune" and it sounded like she as just paraphrasing what we were just telling one another. Maybe I am just a skeptical New Yorker, but I really don't believe in those people.

I don't think you should listen to them. One lady I knew went to one out of curiosity and she was told she would be recieving a lot of flowers very soon....the lady asked why?...the teller said she could not say......later that week her son died in a terrible car wreck...
Some know things and some are fakes...live your life one minute at a time and enjoy the adventure of not knowing .

it irks me when others just assume that ppl who tell fortunes are fake. Of course there are frauds out there, ppl who will take advantage of you for your money. There have been mystics as long as there have been ppl, and there have been con artists too. if you really want to have your fortune told, ask around and find someone with a good reputation. Don't pick a name out of a phone book.

I don't believe in fortune tellers but myself! I feel they are out to make easy money with naïve people that believe in them! (Fortune tellers - no offense - just speaking my mind!)

I do believe that there are people with the gift of sight. This sight is decernment, not fortune telling. As far as fakes are concerned...easy to tell...A fake is one who stands to benefit more from the experience than you will...

I am a Tarot Card reader. I am right on the nose about 90% of the time. I always have repeat clients because what I tell them is either what is going on now or does happen later when I tell them it will.
