I think the other answers were giving initial timing, your total timing should be 25-35 range, but it really depends on your setup.
Unhook the vacuum line to the distributor and hold it shut so your carb still has good vacuum, then run the car up to 3 grand. check timing, adjust. put the vacuum back on. take the car for a drive, sounds good? do it again, go higher timing. do that until it stumbles or hesitates under acceleration., then back off 2-3 degrees.

being that it is a h.p.motor should be set aruond nine or ten but listen for detanation (if not sure what that is email me )
