There are different types of DVDs and not all writers work with all types. If, however you've not got a DVD writer then none of them will work!!
Have a look at the profiler that shows what devices are attached to your pc. It includes internal devices.
If you need to buy an external drive I'd recommend LaCie.

You probably don't have a drive capable of writing a DVD disk.
Your drive may say DVD ROM / CD-R drive, but the DVD is just stating that you can read a DVD drive and not write to it
If your machine is 2002 then your best bet is to get a new machine that has a DVD writer already installed. I can say from experience that you are going to have a frustrating time trying to get a DVD-r writer to work well with a dated computer.

If what you have is a DVD+-RW and NOT just a CD-RW. A CD-RW will burn Cds ONLY! If you DO have a DVD+-RW, check the DVD's or computer's manual, if you don't have one, go to the DVD+-RW's or computer's manufacturer web page and get it there. Your looking for a list of compatible blank DVD media that will work with your DVD burner. Just any old blank DVD's will NOT work with your drive! The manufacturers of the blank DVDs use different color dyes on their discs. Your burner will only burn discs dyed with a certain color of dye, either blue or green.

I'm no tech expert but u need a dvd burner(the hardware) to burn dvds- just like u need a cd burner to burn cds... most computers- even the lastest ones only come with cd burners/dvd players rather than dvd burners, cos' they cost extra.. you could buy an external dvd burner to connect to your cpu.. just go to any computer hardware store for personal service.. or buy direct online for cheaper deals

THESE PEOPLE! (not you) Check your burner for if it reads DVDs. Sad to say there are burners out there that still dont read DVDs. If it reads DVDs than find out whether it can burn DVDs whether it may be r+/r- which ever your case may be but id be careful for lunatics telling you the legal issues involved because im sure you know better. now its up to you if you want to keep it to yourself if your duplicating DVDs or cds

You can't burn DVD's on a CD writer. It's like recording a CD on a turn-table.

Many current DVDs are coded so you can't copy them. It may not be your computer, but the actual DVD.
This is to prevent people from copying the DVDs without paying for them! It is a federal offense to copy DVDs unless you purchas the rights from an online source. If you are just trying to make a copy of a DVD you bought from the store, you won't be able to copy it.
