Different things to different peoples. Some Black people use it as a term of camaradarie (sp?). Some White people use it as a term of hatred. The word originally came from the Spanish word *****, meaning black, and took on its connotations during the slave trade. For this reason, many polite Black and White people have a gut reaction against this word and those who use it, even in the first sense.
