Seaworld is better - they have touching zones where you can pet dolphins and 'sting' rays. For fun they also have rides. They are there much more for entertainment and the Zoo is more for science and education.

I live in San Diego and have been to both many times and I would recommend Sea World. You get some of the elements of a theme park like shows and rides but you also get the educational value of the animals. I think that Sea World is more appealing to all age groups where as the zoo is more aimed at younger kids, plus the zoo doesn't have a whole lot that isn't at every other zoo around.

If you have to choose just one, you need to ask yourself what you're in the mood for.
Sea World is more like an amusement park. There are more rides, and it's good for someone who doesn't have a great attention span (I'm not saying that's you, ok?!!!) If you have only 3-4 hours, you'll feel that you accomplished a lot.
Education-wise, Sea World has an obvious edge in the aquatic, marine life department. So, you have to factor that in if you like sea animals.
The Zoo has a lot more to offer, if you have more time. The Park is huge, and there's just so much more to take in -- not just animals, but plant life, two immense bird "cages", and yes, there are shows. Parking is free, unlike Sea World.
Outside the Zoo, you've got Balboa Park, with museums, the planetarium, space theatre, and nice restaurants.
If you are coming from the north (or staying in the northern part of San Diego), there's the San Diego Wild Animal Park -- and that's even bigger, with animals living in their own natural habitat.
Which one is better? Personally, I'd go with the Zoo. There are Sea Worlds in other states, along with other marine parks. But there is only ONE San Diego Zoo. Very few zoos in America compare to San Diego.

I'd trying going to both if you can. The last time I went to Seaworld was on a field trip in October 2001. It was a great trip, I've heard the San Diego zoo in nice. But Seaworld can be enjoyable, maybe you should find out more info on both places and go from there. But I'd recommend going to Seaworld. I've also been to the San Diego wild animal park, but if I were you I'd go to Seaworld if you wanna see Shamu.

Although Sea World is my favorite, I would encourage you to do both.
The San Diego Zoo is in Balboa Park with a bunch of things to do that is within walking distance. There are about a dozen museums, with the most popular being the Ruben H. Fleet Space Museum. You can do the Zoo during the day, and then catch an Omnimax movie at the space museum that night.
Have a great trip!

Hey Kirsten,
I'm guessing the reason you asked is because you know you SHOULD if you COULD do both; You're asking which one would we prefer. I'm a Sea World girl, but that's because I get very faint in the heat and though it can get hot in Sea World it DOES get HOT at the Zoo. I love the dolphins, the whales and my favorite show is the sea lion show (Clyde & Seymoor) it's a crack up. Plus this year they have a fabulous new show with the whales called Believe...It's stunning, Like Cirque Du Soliel on water with whales! The zoo is incredible, it's the best zoo in the country, it's much, much cheaper thatn Sea world. So to not help you just like everyone else, if you can go to both do! In my book, I prefer Sea World, but there's more than one Sea World and theres only one san Diego Zoo

If you can only do one, I would suggest the zoo. It's one of the best in the country and there is stuff to do there you can't do anywhere else. I can't go to the zoos in other cities now because they just aren't nearly as good. But Sea World is fun too and if you can do both, I would.

I like both but I think sea world gets the nod. It has shows and cool entertainment rather than a primarily educational atmosphere. But if you are crazy about the sun, stay with the zoo. Much more trees. Sea world can get kind of hot with a lack of a lot of shade.

The Zoo is litterly World Famous. It is the best in the world. Sea World is great, but if you miss a chance to visit that Zoo you will regret it. It is worth it.
I used to go there three to four times a week. I got engaged there. It is my favorite place in the world.

@ the zoo there's a lot of walking, and if animals are active, its worth it.@ both places, you should be ready for HEAT, mostly all year round. sea world is fun but very expensive and there are cool new rides(1 at least) and theyre both a blast. sea world is easier to keep cool at because you can sit in the soak zone at the shows and rides involve water. plus the new shamu show is supposed to be awesome!the zoo is in balboa park so you can visit plenty of other attractions while there. at nigh its all lit up!theyre both cool.(theres also legoland in Carlsbad which is cool but best for kids and the wild animal park in Escondido which is just like the zoo but animals are put together in larger areas.)
