I have just finished assembling a nice boat-themed sandbox for my daughter, which calls for some 600 pounds of sand. I have been told, however, that using sand will attract neighborhood cats, who will do what they do and fill that sandbox full of germs. What alternatives do I have? What other materials can I use, instead of sand, that won't attract cats?

Anything you put in there is likely to look like a litter box to a cat. I recommend you cover it when it's not in use.

That is a tough question to answer. You could put flour in the box but hat would just make even more of a mess... You could chop up packing peanuts and use those...You could use mulch... You could use buttons like you would sew onto shirts pants and pillows... You could use pebbles, but that would be rough on the bottom...You could use shredded fabrics... you could use wood shavings... You could use feathers... You could use shredded newspaper... You could use sand and cover it... You could use water and turn it into a mimi pool... There are alot of different choices, you just have to think!!!!!! :-)))))

Substituting sand ........in a sandbox???
What did you have in your sandbox when you were a kid???? And you survived to have kids of your own......
How about some type of cover to keep the cats out of it if you're that germophobic.

Cement. Just don't let the kids play in it when it rains.
Just kidding, just cover it with a lid or tarp when the kids are done.
