America is not ready for a black pres. yet I mean just 40 yrs ago we still had to sit at the back of the bus and couldnt drink out the same water fountains as whites, so its going to take time with each generation we all become less ignorant about racism and more willing to get to know each other for who we are. Now blacks know that every white person isnt a slave master and whites know that every black isnt a crack smoking gangbanger. and i must say i enjoyed reading most the responses of this question it shows how far we all have come so far.

Probably the most likely answer is that any black person smart enough and likeable enough to get the position (such as Colin Powell or Barrack Obama) also are smart enough to know that more than likely the first black president will be assassinated by a racist who doesn't like change or feels that any black person will lead the country in the wrong direction. Colin Powell would be an excellent president, but this was one of the reasons he offered when asked why he wouldn't run. It'll happen sooner or later, but expect it to be later.

There haven't been any viable black candidates running. We have African Americans in almost every other elected position. I don't think that the presidency would be any different IF the right person ran.

...and no, I don't have any one in mind when I say that :-)

that is a good question. do you think with all the hateful people in this world, we would be ready for a black president? people can not look past the color of their skin. I have many friends who are black, they are nicer than whites. they are family to me and I am white.

I think Harold Ford Jr would be a good candiate. He appears to be half white and half black so potentially he could understand both cultures and their values.

THE REAL REASON WE HAVEN'T HAD A BLACK PRESIDENT IS BECAUSE THE RACIST REDNECKS WOULD HAVE HIM ASSASINATED WITHIN A YEAR OF TAKING OFFICE.
I THINK THE BIGGER QUESTION IS WHY NOT A WOMAN PRESIDENT?

i don't know either but i think it is not right to only have a certain race running our country. that's why i am not proud to be an American because we are prejudice.
