The Israel lobby is too strong and there's too much riding on a strong relationship with Israel to throw it away over Palestine. Check out Noam Chomsky's essay in response to John Mersheimer and Stephen Walt at
http://www.chomsky.info/articles/20060328.htm
he has some interesting things to say about the situation although its too complicated for anyone to ever solve

What utterly ignorant comments by people like Bill S, Andy F and Danni. You cannot punish the entire Palestinian population for the acts of some people of Palestinian origin. That is like punishing all American people for the acts of a few American soldiers in Iraq, or punishing all the Israeli people for the acts of a few Israeli soldiers in Gaza. Collectively punishing an entire population for the acts of certain members of that population has to be terrorism by anyone's definition of the word. And what Israel (or more accurately the Israeli government) is doing in Gaza now is outrageous. They are deliberately targeting civilians by depriving them of electricity and water and they keep ordinary Gazans awake all night by using low flying aircraft to create 'sonic booms', which sound like bombs and have caused many Palestinian women to miscarry their babies (I wonder why we do not hear anything from the anti-abortion Bush-supporting lobby in the US about this). You can read more about how the Israeli government is terrorising the Gazans here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,1811307,00.html

When Israeli soldiers kill innocent civilians, we all rightly protest if certain Palestinian groups respond by trying to collectively punish the Israeli civilian population, and so all of us, whether we are Brits, Israelis, Americans, Palestinians or whatever, should protest if Israel punishes the entire Palestinian population in Gaza for the acts of a few Palestinians in kidnapping an Israeli soldier.

If a foreign army collectively punished you, your family and your community in this way, would this make you more likely to want peace with them, or more likely to hate them?

Anyway, I should answer the question. The US will always support Israel because it needs a reliable non-Muslim proxy state in the Middle East to police any threats to its oil interests in the region, whether such threats come from popular democratic movements or unfavourable dictators. Basically, by supporting Israel, the US has a 51st state right in the heart of an area so crucial to its economic interests. What the US needs to realise is that it will win far more influence in the region if it stops bankrolling the Israeli occupation and does not use violence against people who live in the Middle East.

"What you mean all those Palestinians carrying guns", Women praising there sons when they go out and kill innocent people in suicide bombings. All those young kids running around with machine guns. All those Uniformed people parading about the streets brandishing Weapons. All those people firing guns into the air at funerals, YOU mean their all Innocents. If they are all innocent who the hell is firing mortar rounds into Israeli settlements. Who has been doing the suicide bombings in Israel.
So when all is said and done Palestinians have done nothing wrong. And its all the fault of Israel. And its aggressive People.
Why would anyone go to the UN. for anything. Look at Darfor need i say more.

There were to many resolutions against Israel vetoed by US ...And now with the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and with the support of Israel there,US is going to have more control over the Middle East...No matter on how or who's body they step on.Both US and Israel just want as much power as they can get without caring about the others...

Educate yourself about the situtation. Israel gave palestine a state years ago but that wasn't good enough for them, they used it to attack Israel and thats why things are the way they are today.

See the "palestinians" are fueled by a mind-controlling religion called islam (all religions control your mind, but islam encourages to kill infidels especially jews and christians)

Now palestinians kidnapped a soldier doing his job, making sure there weren't any terroist around. They kidnapped him and now Israel has everyright in the world to invade Gaza and topple the evil Hamas government

The palestinians are awful people (well the ones that are doing these crimes, some of them are actually good i heard).

It is awful how the world portrays Israel. I remember hearing that someone from the French Government said,
"Why should we protect this Sh*tty little country that could lead us into World War 3?"
I think that is an awful attitude to have. USA could've said the same during WW1 and WW2. We have to protect the innocent people around the world who are just trying to live their lifes, like the israelis. It is the western countrys jobs to protect people from evil.

I don't see how helping Israel isn't fair to the arab world. Are we suppose to let muslims and people fueled by Islam kidnap Israel soldiers and kill bus loads of jewish children all for the fact that they are jewish? The Hamas government needs to be toppled and destroyed to ensure peace and security to Israel.

" I think the U.S. should just stay out of it.. "

The US is on the right side, they support and fund Israel

"I don't really like the fact that they choose to support Israel even after Israel seems to continuously kill kids and civilians. "

You mean like how palestinians shove their 10 and 12 year old girls and boys into killing israelis? YOu mean how they strap bombs to their kids and send them out to kill innocnt israelis? Or when ADULT palestinians kill busloads of children.

Show me a link where Israel killed a child? I know there was a story that Israel soldiers killed a pali family but it was proven to be a mistake (In war, believe it or not mistakes happen, just like all the stories that come up about the US soldiers killing civilians in iraq. Its war, and thsee things always happen)

" I think most American's think that the Palestinians are terrorists mainly because of the suicide bombing's. I don't know what they expect them to do though, trying to fight a war with no army or real military technology. We should stay out of it for once though...."

Palestinians are controlled by Islam-fascim. US stands up for what is right, that is why we are on Israel's sides.

I should quote the Australian prime minister after 9/11:

"This is no time to be an 80 percent ally,''

I think we should have the same attitude towards Israelis. Full allies all the way

The usa supports Israel because there is a very active Israeli lobby in washington D.C. You can read books by Paul Findley such as: "They Dare to Speak Out : People and Institutions Confront Israel's Lobby" which gives a very good insight about how strong the Israeli lobby is in the USA

Israel has the right approach. They are going after one of their soldiers. They are slowly destroying Palastine until their soldier is returned. Should Palestine be able to jsut do what ever they want, no, they should be accountable for their actions. If this country had half backbone as Israel we would all be much safer.

Palestine is not an accepted name for the Palestinians and the
fact that you use it indicates that you are in a select group of
thinkers. These people are a constant reminder of the g oreat
sell out by nations that were involved in the making of this
tragedy. Annihaltions there are akin to the way we treated the
"Spirit" of America is being snuffed out because of our behavior
and involvement in this affair.

US Government always pretends to be the best in the world. That means they want to show how dangerous they are and better nobody takes any chance to start with them.....They as well produce a lot of arms and need to try it. No soldiers count!
If they so strong and powerful, and clever should find a way how to stop wars and poverty instead.

Atrocities are being performed by both sides. America just supports Israel because it is an ally and Palestine is being led by Hamas, which is itself an enemy of America. But to be honest, no one (including America) is ever clean in these kinds of things.
