try getting a baby lamb. Those are cute, pretty easy to take care of, and only really need a barn and some outdoors to comfort him!
~*Alyssa*~ p.s I see lots of lambs oin Vermont! Thats a good place for farming. If u live there, maybe i could help u!

a pot belly pig
a goat
a donkey a little bit more work than the pot belly pig and goat but this is an animal you will be able to ride, living in the country isn't very fun so you need some entertainment.

A sheep or goat. or maybe a duck or chicken! Something small and cute! If they are 12 they should be able to handle a sheep sized animal! Good luck!

okay for one...
chickens are so hard to take care of
and they stink
and they poo everywhere
goats can be okay
but i had a bad experiance with one when i was little
because it charged at me and i was really small compared to it
why not an alpaca?
they are like a llama except for way nicer
and they dont spit
and they are small
and they are cute and cuddley
heres a website you can go to that has facts about alpacas
http://www.ilovealpacas.com/lifestyle.shtml
honestly...
i would get one if i had an acre of land
or if i had a bigger backyard
i hope that helps
and i wish the best to your decision

Ask your 12 year old what type of animal he/she is interested in. The more interest, the more likely he/she is to care for the animal and not push it off on you.

A small hog is a good pet, real intelligent, too.
If I had the area for one, I'd have a hog.
