I'm just wondering whether refs can add unlimited amounts of time i.e. 45 mins! I don't reckon even 45 mins could have saved England though!

Well, the actual time played in one half should be 45 mins, so the maximum that a ref could add would be 45 minutes, if, say a player got injured one second after the kick-off, and it took 45 minutes to treat him (that'd be one hell of an injury!) then the ref could in theory add 45 minutes (well, 44 minutes 59 seconds), but it's more likely that they'd abandon the match.

Although, of course, if another player then was also injured in a similar fashion, a further few minutes could be added to the added time. And so on...

there was a UEFA Champions' League semi-final between two English teams, Liverpool & Chelsea two years ago. Liverpool were leading 1-0 until the full 90 minutes, when the referee announced an additional 6 minutes. however, Chelsea still unable to find the elusive goal that takes them to the final in those 6 minutes. Liverpool hung on to a 1-0 win & qualify for the final, which they beat AC Milan 3-2 on penalties after both teams were tied 3-3 after 120 minutes to win the European Cup for the fifth time!!

Well if you mean soccer then if the 2 teams tie after two 45 minites halfs then they do 2 15 mins halfs and who ever scores in that time peirod then they win but if not they do a shoot out. So the most time you can have is about 130mins.

In the Copa America 1983@Buenos Aires, Ecuador was beating Argentina 2-1, the referee (Ortube from Bolivia) added 12 MINUTES to the match, finally he gave a penalty shot to Argentina, they scored and the match ended 2-2.

Poster means football kewly,

the poster is after time added i.e injury time after the standard 90 mins, not extra time which is only used in a knockout competition.
