Remember that as the bill is being presented, there is set rounding. For example, $1.01 and $1.02 will round DOWN to $1.00 AND $1.03 and $1.04 will round UP to $1.05

I'm smart enough to make change for a dollar so should everyone else. Keep the penny just changed what it is made of.

No. When sales tax is applied, it is applied at a quarter of a percent. If the penny is abolished, then after sales tax is applied to a given sale, the price would most certainly be rounded up to the next increment of five cents.

Example: everytime you buy, say, a DVD for 9.99, instead of paying 10.81 (9.99 + 0.82 sales tax) you now pay 10.85.

It would be fine with me. A a c-store where I worked 25 years ago kids used to throw pennies at me that I gave them as change. By now I guess they're throwing quarters.

In fact, it would be OK with me to do away with dimes and nickels while we're at it. Let's just have quarters, which is the only coin most vending machines take nowdays anyway.
