Well, I was a cutter, its been a very long time since i cut myself. If i answer as a cutter i would have to say that cutting saved my life. It helped me to feel when i felt numb and helped to calm me down when I was mad or what ever. Cutting seemed to solve my every emotional problem. I can remember feeling so crazy I just wanted to die and then I'd cut and it would bring me down a few notches. When I cut I couldn't make it through a day without my blade in my pocket book.
If I answer as a recovered cutter, I would say that cutting took up a bunch of time out of my life. I would block so many emotions and I had so much built up hate. I didn't want to be around people because I had cuts and scars all over my body. I tried to hide from the world because no one understood why I destroyed my body. It wasn't helping me at all. It just helped me hide how i felt. It only maksed my pain for a short time. I cut at night and by morning i was beating myself up over cutting the night before. I was stuck in a cycle that controlled my life, when all that time i thought i controlled it. Cutting will always be a part of my life, I can't escape it. I'm covered in scars and I still carry a razor blade around, just for comfort. I haven't cut in 4 years. but still it looms over me and whenever I have a bad day the first thought that comes to mind is cutting.
My advice to anyone who thinks about it, don't. Stay away while you can. My advice for people that do cut, find help where ever you can. My help was my child. I quit cutting when I became pregnant. Everyone will find help in different places and in different ways.
Cutting is hard to overcome, but it can be done.

speak with a psychologist, psychaitrist, or find a talk therapy program through your local hospital..
In my personal experience battling the madness of being bipolar I have come across many, many cutters.. most if not all are taking thiese actions because they are hurting very badly on the inside or feel guilt and regret about a situation that was beyond their control.. find someone you can talk to and sort through the reason you feel this is the answer.. sometimes it can be a trusted friend or a complete stranger in the world of counseling that you can build a healthy relationship with. people cut for a lot of reasons.. and none of them are ever healthy ..
Nobody says... 'I feel great today so I am gonna tear at my skin with this handy sharp object'
There is help out there and you have to meet them halfway.. there is a always a way out of any destructive pattern.. if you do your part to seek the help.
It is far from normal behavior.. and you are far from alone in the way you react to what might be feeling to resort to this.. I wish you well..
If it is not you that you are worried about.. print this out and hand it on :)

I think it is unhealthy (not because the bible says so) but because it is a sign of deep-seated problems. Cutting is usually a sign that he/she feels like they cannot control their lives so they do what they can control. Anyone who is thinking about cutting should talk to someone - a counselor, a parent, a friends, anyone. They are not alone!

I studied psychology for 3 years high school and college.

I have been treated for manic depression ... I know people who cut, too. You probably do it to punish yourself for something you carry guilt for. You need to find a doctor or mentor or parent or other relative who you trust. Get help. Good luck....

it's horrible. there was a cutting "fad" at my school once.... where it became cool to cut and you got a lot of attention for it. it was absolutely awful and unfortunately for some, it became much more than a fad. :(

I think it's done mostly by teenage girls who have low-self esteem and are too stupid to do anything else about it. It's cowardly and dumb, and makes you ugly, too!
