Garlic is the best and safest mosquito repellent!! I had one child who was very popular mosquito food when he was a baby, and I used it on him every night. If I missed one night, he'd be okay, but if I forgot twice in a row, he'd be all bitten up again.

Not only that, but it is antibacterial and antiviral. If your baby has any bites, apply it straight to the bites. Otherwise, just put it on any convenient spot (I used to use his forehead).

Take a pinch of powdered garlic between your fingers, and run them quickly under running water. Make a paste. Spread it on the skin.

It smells only for a few minutes (until it dries). And it works *really* well; everyone I've recommended it to raves about it. And garlic is actually an ingredient in many anti-mosquito yard sprays (read a package in a local store).

Don't use anything with deet in it. To find the most gentle mosquito repellants in your area, find a local health food store. They will usually carry a couple of different brands. The motto that I go by is - if they don't list the ingredients - they're usually hiding something. Also, if they are listing the ingredients, check for anything with, you know, 20 letter words that you've never heard of. These are usually chemicals that are questionable, to say the least.

And even if you get a natural one, put a little bit on a patch of baby's skin first to make sure there won't be a reaction. Many bug repellants are not safe for babies. One that I know of that is, is called West-A-Nile-Ate, made by Hempola. It is in an all natural hemp oil base with essential oils and is completley safe for newborns. Check out their website at http://www.hempola.com - I am in Canada, so I can't make any recommendations for what would be more available anywhere else (though I do know that Hempola ships - I used to work for them)

Don't use DEET!

Avon Skin-So-Soft works great! We used to stock it in the first aid tent at many scout camporees!

I use lemongrass oil on my kids. On a visit to a national park last summer one of the more "outdoorsy" rangers recommended vanilla extract. I've not tried it yet, but I know there are several pine trees whose bark smell like vanilla that aren't plagued by bugs.

Garlic is also another terrific option, though I wouldn't apply it to the skin. It can cause irritation and even worse if rubbed into the eyes. Try sneaking some into their food (or your food if nursing).

Hope this helps!

Burts Bees has a great bug repellent. It's all natural and I totally trust it.

Don't use a dryer sheet! It could break out his/her skin, the chemicals in those thing are way to strong for a baby, it's why they make Dreft and other baby laundry products.

Use a sheet of Bounce and put it in a pocket or in the child's crib or car seat. The scent of the Bounce sheet is a natural deterrent to the mosquito and it keeps them away.

It really works!!!!!

Anything that doesn't have DEET in it - your baby is too young for the effects of that chemical. Try any of the AVON products, called Bug Guard - or look for all natural stuff.
