It depends on where you live, how big your house is, and whether you want window units or a central A/C unit. If it's window units, you have a choice of a 220 volt unit (which will probably involve you hiring a electrician to wire some circuits for this...depending on how many you buy), and some 110 volt units. The 220 units are cheaper on electricity....the largest 110 unit that I know of you can get from Sears for around $350 each. The 220 volt units are more expensive, but cool quicker, and you can also get these with heating in them also. Now a central A/C unit is a lot more expensive, but should save money in the long run, depending on how good the house is insulated. You can start off with that at around $4,000....this is completely installed. If you're not going to stay in that beach house year around, then I would recommend you place some window units, or you can even cut a hole in the wall and place window units in there...I recommend mounting them high if you do that. I live in Louisiana, so this works well with us if we don't have a central unit. Whatever you get, make sure you buy a warranty with this, and clean your filters at least once a month. I wish you the best of luck.

central air? just for the air handler and compressor it's about $6000...then you have to have all the duct work done...
window units...about $150-350 each

If you're by the beach and it's a second home...I wouldn't waste money on more than window units. My parent's A/C at their beach house (which is their permanent residence), needs to be replaced and is only 5 years old. The salt air is so damaging to anything metal that they've gone through about 4 grills, and they've tried cheapy and expensive, all, even with covers, rust.
