My mother is 51.5 years old. She works 2 full time jobs. Once I finish college and as she ages, I know I have to help her finacially (whichs is fine). I want her to budget & save her money, how do I approach this in a caring manner and not sound controlling?

She raised five kids on her own and went without for so long. Now she just buys what she wants and saves little.

Sit down and have a heart-to-heart talk with her. Just tell her that you are concerned that she's prepared for the future, and that you want to help out however you can. Maybe have a spreadsheet drawn up with a budgeting plan or buy a simple budgeting software for individuals.

And start the day by doing something nice with her, like having lunch together or going to get a manicure/pedicure. Then you can ease into the "serious conversation" when y'all get back home.

I help my parents out financially (they are in their 70's), and they have a hard time sometimes admitting that they need my help. It's hard for them to make that transition from you being the child to you being the adult.

You've gotten some good answers so far. Just let her know that you love her and are appreciative for all she's done for you, and now you'd like to return the favor by helping her become financially aware and stable.

Ask her if you can help her start planning for her retirement.
