Personal preference really. What I have used is a layer of cork (approx. 1cm. thick) to absorb the pressure of the errant dart, thus ensuring no damage to the tip. Then behind this some MDF (approx. 2cm. thick) which adds some stability to hang on to the wall. Don't forget the official height to the centre of the bull is 5ft.8in. from the floor and 7ft.9 3/4in. from the FACE of the board to the back of the oche !

Plywood, maybe covered with felt or with cork to prevent damaging the wall.
