That very much depends on where you are in Berlin.
Potsdam is basically a suburb of Berlin (please when in Potsdam don't tell anybody I said this).
If you go from Berlin Main Station by S-Bahn or regional train it takes you about half an hour and should cost you not much more than 5$.

The trip takes 17 min via Regional Express trains and 33 min via S-Bahn.

in my knowledge , potsdam is 30km from berlin.. there are lots of public transport available to go there.. i would suggest train.. but train in germany is quite expensive

another alternative is car pooling - if u can speak german- the go search mitfahrgelengeheit in google.de - then u can find someone to car pool with - usually cost very litte
