First of all what OS are you using and do you have nic cards on both systems. If you have Win XP just connect both computers via the network connections/local area network with a network hub. If you have no nic cards you can utilize the usb, modem, or serial port.

With Win XP it will find the network for you with all others you must establish a network with addresses and so on.

i'm too tired right now but have a browse through my previous answers (click my name and then browse for the question most like yours click and open it read the advice i gave).
but to sum up it depends on what you want to do. you can connect two computer directly with a crossover cable or connect your computers to a router and then run the windows networking tool to set up your configuratons correctly. if you want to share files and folder enable the folders that you want to share by right clicking and selecting share and then follow the instructions.

you should also consider the security status of your network. by that i mean do you want your system password protected access or not. you need to decide whats best for you.

there is more so please read the previous answers as this provides more information.

All you need is a nic in each machine and a ethernet crossover cable. Windows networking setup should take care of the rest except you will need to statically assign the ip addresses. Just use 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.11 with a subnet mask 255.255.255.128 and you are on your way.
