You must hit the cue ball low to apply "English that will make the cue reverse after it makes contact with your object ball. Most people will make the mistake of jacking the back end of the cue up in the air but that will scoop the cue up into the air and make it hop (which is illegal). Keep the back end of your cue low and hit the cue ball low with your stick.

You must aim a little lower from the center of the cue ball, not to low or it will make the ball jump.
