These three lions appear on the Royal Coat of Arms of England, not on the flag. The flag of England, or the union jack, is made up of criss-crossed red, white and blue stripes.

The coat of arms is red and bears three lions, in its various forms. The one that you may be thinking of dates from 1198-1340.

The coat of arms initially began with 2 golden lions.

Following the Norman conquest of England after 1066, the arms of the House of Normandy were used in England, two golden lions on a red field. The succession of King Henry II of the House of Plantagenet in 1158 saw the first known arms of an English monarch used, a golden lion on a red field.

When King Richard I ("The Lionheart") came to the throne he adopted his personal arms as three golden lions on a red field. The origin of these arms is thought to be based on the earlier Norman arms. According to one tradition, the extra lion was added to two existing Norman lions to represent the combined Anglo-Norman realm. According to another tradition the two leopards were combined with the single leopard of Aquitaine on the acquisition of these continental territories by the English Crown. Other heraldic authorities have claimed that at an early stage in the development of heraldry the number of Norman lions was not fixed and that it is simply a matter of design as to why England has ended up with three heraldic lions and Normandy with two.

I am somewhat confused. What lions?

The flag of Great Britian is the Union Jack, which is red/white/blue cross on cross.

The flag of England is St. George's Cross, a red cross on a white background.

Perhaps you're thinking of The FA (Football Association) in England? http://www.thefa.com/

What is the history of The FA crest?
England teams have worn the three lions on their shirts since international football began. A contemporary drawing of action from the first match - Scotland v England in Glasgow in 1872 - clearly shows them. In those days, though, there was a little rose above the shield enclosing the lions. The rose persisted until 1949.

A number of sporting bodies - as well as towns like Canterbury and York - adopted the three lions as their crest. It derives from the royal coat of arms borne in battle by English kings, and is thought to have arrived in England from Normandy. Richard I 'the Lionheart' used the three golden lions on their scarlet background as a powerful symbol of the English Throne during the Crusades in the 12th century. The FA Committee thought it appropriate for a football team "going into battle".

I don'tknow if they have names. There are different versions of how the crest evolved, but I believe that Richard the Lionheart was the king who introduced the 3 lions & that they represented England, Normandy & Aquitaine. They are also often referred to as leopards, rather than lions.

It's a medieval throwback. Richard the Lionheart had a banner with one Lion on it. His son had two lions, his grandson three. I have absolutely no idea why it's used in football but that's where it comes from.

Probably got something to do with Richard the Lionheart. It's so stupid, it's like having elephants on the Irish jersey. Why have animals that are not native to your country.
