I stepped on something and punctured my foot. I don't know what it was and couldn't find it or see it. It didn't bleed and doesn't seem particularly deep. I cleaned it out and have been covering it with Neosporin and bandages. My husband and I have looked at the wound (a tiny pin hole) and can't see anything stuck in there. It hurts like the Dickens when I step on it, sharp pain. I called the doctor. Anyone had this happen before? What can the doctor do? I'm not normally scared of the doctor's, but I can't stand injections and hope he doesn't cut into my foot. Please put my anxiety at ease.
My last tetanus was 1997. It's still good, right?

bordergirltx, the polar bear is my homage to Lost.
I did make an appointment for this afternoon. I was hoping someone could give me an indication of what the doctor would do since I'm very anxious about certain (possibly painful) procedures. If I'm informed, I know what to expect and can relax.

I have bad luck in that area. Have you soaked your foot in alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide? The doctor can poke around and tells you if he can find any thing. Probably some pain killers. He also could give you another tetanus again just to be on the safe side.

Yeah tetanus shots last up to 10 years, go back next year in 2007 for your next one. And even if you got lockjaw from your tetanus shot being overdue, your jaw would hurt not your foot. You should really go to the doctors about it though just to make sure it's not anything severe. He's not going to cut open your foot or anything. The most a doctor would do is an x-ray, and he won't give you an injection unless you have something really bad. Just make an appointment with your doctor, it could be infected, and the most he will do is put you on an antibiotic.

It happened to me, but I had a recent tetanus shot, so I kept a close eye on it for swelling and infection. Mine was a nail. It hurt like the dickens for awhile, but it got better. I don't know how long a tetanus shot last, but everytime you go to the hospital they always ask you when your last shot was (within 5 years). Keep an eye on it. If it doesn't improve, go see your doctor. I'd much rather you see a doctor than to loose the foot all together.

Tetnus is usually good for ten years, but they do give a booster if necessary. The only way to find out for sure is to go to the doctor My father-in-law stepped on a nail with his tennis shoes on and didn't go to the doctor and ended up in the hospital and almost lost his foot..

in person-friendly words an x-ray can tell if that is damaged (fractured is an same element). you're doing the right element, raise and ice. attempt no longer to positioned weight on it for some days and save it higher. putting your foot down will in person-friendly words make the swelling worse. it really is accessible to tear some ligaments and under no circumstances have a destroy, too. If its no longer better in some days you want to ascertain your health practitioner or an orthopedic (bone health practitioner).

You'll be fine. Keep treating it as you have been. You are on the edge of a nerve so it hurts like hell. Just let it heal. The doctor will just charge you to give you drugs.
