To find out if you are learning the material. If they didn't test for it, they couldn't "certify" that you had completed the training, and the degrees awards and/or diplomas would have no value whatsoever.

In olden times students stayed with masters ( for example : monasteries, temples, palaces or any may be his own house) and they were monitored by the chief master directly everyday. and the the chief master was the authority of the particular institution or monastery or whatever. and the society approved the graduation if it was approved by the chief master of the institution. IN this case a students progress was directly overseen by the master himself and he can judge how good his student is or not. so he definitely knows his merits. which leaves no importance for examinations as such..but competitions were conducted to see which student is the best ..they were open competitions . now exams are needed to see the average capability of a student what he has grasped or learned from the particular year or semester. its not fully foolproof .because a bright student who falls ill in the exam time is unfortunate.. internal assessments and weekly or monthly assignment reports cures this scene some how..,

exams are the quality check lines on students ability.

because people want young people to b put under huge amounts of pressure so that they do stupid things like commit suicide or run away from home
