I've seen many people use the term in a somewhat derogatory sense (I may be wrong) and wans't able to find anything specific with an online search ?

IT HAS NO REAL MEANING IN ENGLISH.. IN THE YUDDISH(MIXER OF MANY CULTURES BUT MOSTLY JEWISH) A SCHMO IS THE FOLLOWING. UN-INLIGHTEND...SILLY..STUPID..HAVE NO SENCE..WELL YOU GET THE IDEA!!! OH YAH ..IT CAN MEAN THE AVERAGE GUY OR GIRL THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW THE NAME OF.

Joe Schmo is like a generic brand person...he's a no name no fame kind of guy, whose opinion is worth nothing pretty much.

To me it's like saying so and so, it's just a way of expressing a name of a person who you do not know all that well.
