It's because they are recognized by a large audience. Like if were to say 'who's marriage is better, Randy Cook's or Adam Smith's, you wouldn't know who they are and couldn't offer an opinion. You're in the celebrity 'ask and answer' section of a yahoo chat, so you're asking a moot and pointless question.
People in this day in age have no direction, purpose or 'cause' to fight for so we work daily jobs and look for venues of entertainment to distract us from our dull existence. Celebrities are the perfect shallow medium to distract us because they are conversation starters for bored people to converse over while we avoid revealing our true feelings about self-issues. Instead of discussing ways to correct someone's drinking problem, we'd rather discuss Angelina's lips and adopted child. Why? Because everyone avoids the 'real' issues they have, they put off taking a risk to improve and substantiate their lives to a better direction out of fear and laziness.

Tom Cruise is hot and very nice and people loving. He's doesnt place himself on a petty stool toward his fans. Now Brad Pitt is fine and all but he can just F#%K OFF!!! He's so sprung over Angelina he's bouncing everywhere. How could he leave Jennifer Aniston like that?!!
