because the united states is the ONLY country with the word "america" in its official name and calling ourselves united statesians seems just a tad bit too awkward

We aren't the only county that does that. The official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos de Mexico or the United States of Mexico. It is easier to use the short version of the name.

By the way North America and South America are continents and we are the only country with the word America in the title.

There is no country south America. United States of America. America the Beautiful..We have been doing it for years. You don't have to if it bothers you. Why does it bother you? You are too picky.

its just whqat you want to call it. In The United States, the people are called Americans. SO as a nickname, the United States of America is cal America. its also easier to say america than U.S.

Good question. My guess is that, because "Americans" have a tendency to adapt or shorten complex names, you hear it refered to as the US instead of the United States often, citizens casually use America, and every one knows what is meant. At the same time, I don't think it's meant to be demeaning, and, having lived in Canada, I know for a fact that they refer to the US as America and don't seem to think any thing of it. For all I know about Mexico, they may be insulted as hell.

I do not consider myself American. I am from Canada which makes up part of North America, just as France makes up part of Europe. I could say I was from North America, but would never say I was North American.

Because the name of the nation is "United States of America".

And, Americans didn't coin that phrase. That's the name given it by others.

Because we are in the United States of AMERICA, the only country that shortens its name to 'America'. Mexico does the same thing, only they are the United States of MEXICO (in Spanish, of course.)

We don't lay claim to or want countries here other than our own, and I don't think we are confusing anyone.
