My mother painstakingly put St. Augustine grass throughout our yard when I was a teen....taking a few squares of sod, and breaking them apart gently and putting the roots she pulled out into tiny trenches she dug. We all helped, took forever (an entire week, have a half acre backyard!) but the results years later were worth the effort! Her grass is thick, luxurious, beautifully green and soft on the barefeet. So I would say "YES" to your question!

It's in my backyard and made it through the worst winter here in 25 years, so yes! It's drought and shade tolerant, spreads quickly and self repairs. It's so thick I don't ever have to treat it for weeds.

i would say that it would grow well there, since your climate is similar to mine. my neighbor just sodded their whole yard in st. Augustine and in about 2 months it looks great even with our drought. be forewarned that its not cheap compared to Bermuda or fescue. its about 140$ a pallet. i think i am going to sod mine next year if my zoysia grass experiment doesn't work?????????
