I mean when I was young I was asked what do you want to be when you're older and I said at the time I wanted to be a teacher - now young people reply with I want to be famous - why?

I expect it is because we have so much access to the lives of celebrities and our obsession has meant that people don't need to achieve anything at all of any note to become famous (eg reality TV stars, glamour models, footballers wives etc). Young people see it as an easy way to money and recognition. Sadly, we don't seem to be able to hold up people who have worked for what they have (and that can include actors/singers etc, but those with real talent) - teachers, doctors, secretaries, CEOs, postmen - doesn't matter what the level is, we have lost the realisation that you have to earn your way, earn respect and have a real sense of self-worth - not one given to you by people who don't actually know you.

It saddens me deeply and I hope we see a backlash against it soon.

I'm with you on that. I think it's the materialistic era. People know that fame means you have everything handed to you on a plate, and every kid wants everything. I, on the other hand, despise the idea of fame. a) it's rarely earned, b)it's so superficial c) it strips you of your actual identity and replaces it with the identity the media chooses for you and d) you have no privacy, and can never do right for doing wrong. You are always too fat, too thin, a bad parent, a bad spouse, cheating, working too hard, spotty, greasy hair, your clothes are bad, you wore the same jumper twice in your life etc etc etc.

Children have too much access to the media - e.g. Internet, magazines, television, radio... they are constantly bombarded by the media's ideasl, and the media thrives in fame, and hence promotes this value/status.

Youths today are looking for the fast-track to the riches they desire, but this hedonism will end in an early anticlimax. After all, it is true - you live fast, you die young.

I think wanting to be famous has ALWAYS been alluring to some. I think a bigger issue nowadays is famous for what? 15 minutes on a reality TV show, being a greed whore, acting stupid for a camera, be a spoiled hollywood NOTHING but still get attention anyway. Being "Famous" doesn't mean anything anymore. It's all B.S. And I pity this generation's MTV, ADD infected lives. They are made fools of everyday.

Well... because...when you were young, there was no American Idol, Next top Model, So you think you can dance, Chef Wars, TRL, Real World-Road-Rules Reunion Gauntlet,106 and Park, E-True Hollywood-Celebrity's Best-Worst-Ugliest 3rd-World Adopted Baby, Hogan Knows Best, etc...etc...etc... (oh and probably no high-speed internet either). That's why "Fame" is of the utmost importance. Not worth, value, contribution, education, fulfillment - NO... just fame. You can thank the media. MEDIA!! take a bow please!! Thank you , Media!...you may be seated.

The media! and their Parents...
I think as a result of less mums at home or Family ruptures or Careless parents, kids have been left abandoned in their expectations from life and so they are a bit lost and trying to impress others so they can make up for the attention they never gained from their own Family.

Have you ever seen the movie "Troy" ?

Fame is immortality in the eyes of many. At least, I know I think it would be cool to be known by name to future generations.
