Names are usually derived from some old Latin, English, French, etc. variation of an actual word or phrase. At the time, some of those names may have not been masculine or feminine per se.
Example: Michelle is derieved from the name Michael, which is french, which means "He who is like God."

I think it might be too "toughen" them up. They may think that with a name like that the boy will be able to meet life's obstacles head on when he grows up. But it's real stupidity on their part and just plain senseless and demeaning to saddle your kid like that from birth.
