I was once a missionary on a ship ministry to the island of Haiti and we got stuck on a sandbar in the water and the ship almost breached(tipped over). If it had tipped over it would have blown up! We were able to radio for help and pulled off and towed to safety!

It wasn't abroad, but it was though the same agency that sent me abroard.
Every time I've landed in the Orlando FL airport, I feel like I'm on a foreign planet. I was holding travel brochures once and I had several people in the airport telling me that that travel agency didn't exist. Very frustrating!
When I traveled out of the country, the travel agency employees were standing at the airport with signs in English pointing me in the right direction. They always had someone available who spoke a broken variety of English. It was a very enjoyable experience.
